What Remains Comparison study

In script writing you need to be prepared to cut and change your story until it is the best it can possibly be.
What Remains is a television drama about a retired policeman investigating a murder in a block of flats. The copy of the script you can download from the writers room has a selection of changes from the finished article. So I'm going to speculate on why three parts of the story have been changed.
The First part which has been cut is from the opening prologue where Melissa gets murdered. I think these scenes with her struggle and a silhouette walking towards her where probably cut by a director as it would be hard to mask the identity of the killer if you could partially see them.

The second cut bit I'm going to talk about is a selection of scenes including a character who is entirely cut from the story. Naresh, Vidyas father. I think the scenes with him where cut due to lack of connection with the point of the story. most of his lines revolve around his daughter and her boyfriends lives and not with the mystery.

This final section that has been cut appears inside Lens retirement and is best surmised as him telling stories about his time in the police force, this I thought was changed due to how long these anecdotes would take to film and how little impact they would have on the story at hand.

  1. Please write in standard English ("going to" not "gonna"). Also please ensure that titles are capitalised ("What Remains" not "What remains" "BBC Writers Room" etc) and ideally underlined. You have, though, identified that if things don't move the story or the character forward in some way they will be cut.
